"Powers that Come Forth"

"Sacraments are 'powers that comes forth' from the Body of Christ, which is ever-living and life-giving. They are actions of the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church. They are 'the masterworks of God' in the new and everlasting covenant.1"
                              - Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1116

Sacraments are signs of God's grace in our lives - opening us to the presence of God in the world and in ourselves. Catholics have seven sacraments that we believe were instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church for God's people. As such, sacraments live within the community of believers.

The sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation initiate new members into the Body of Christ, which is the Church. Many are baptized as infants, however, it is not unusual at all for people to come into Church later, as older children, or as adults, who have made a conscious, prayerful decision to join the Church.

The Eucharist is the high prayer of the Church and we invite you to read Fr. John's excellent essay on this core sacrament. (Mass Schedule)

The sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick strengthen and renew members of the Church. In times of need, the Church is abe to respond with consolation and hope and so witness to the good and celebrate the power of God in our lives.

There are also two sacraments that recognize and so grace the special call that some members of the community have for a particular service. The sacrament of Matrimony celebrates the love that, drawing on the sacrificial love of Christ, provides the basis and cornerstone of community life together. Through Holy Orders deacons, priests, and bishops offer their lives more fully in service of God and the community.

We invite you to learn more about the sacraments of our lives together and please do not hesitate to ask the pastoral team about any of the sacraments.
