St. Martin de Porres Meals
Feeding the Hungry
Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.
- Sirach 18:25
In addition to the Winter Shelter program, St. Joseph’s parishioners and volunteers support St. Martin de Porres Shelter by making and serving sandwiches, boiled eggs, fruit and milk for men age 50 and older each Saturday of the month. We have a separate team of 20-25 people for each Saturday of the month. On some Saturdays in addition to sandwiches volunteers bring hot dogs and buns. Volunteers make the food in the comfort of their own homes once a month and then drop them off at church hospitality room. Food can be dropped off during the church's open hours.
The meal program began in response to a need of the Archdiocesan Housing Authority’s St. Martin de Porres shelter. St. Martin’s provides overnight shelter for 212 men and a warm meal for 275-300 men a day. They do not, however, have a large kitchen in which to prepare a meal so they rely on outside groups to provide the food each night of the year. Ours is one of many groups who work in collaboration to provide meals for the men 365 days a year. Click here to access the St. Martin de Porres Shelter website.
Please contact us and we will be happy to welcome you to this ministry. To volunteer on the 1st Saturday of the month, email Mary Watts; for the 2nd Saturday of the month email Ann Carson or the 3rd Saturday of the month email Taffy McCormick; and for the 4th Saturday of the month email Candace Frankinburger. A few times a year we have a 5th Saturday meal and that is coordinated by Mary Ott.
